Bring in the two ads you are planning to compare to class. Read through and try out exercises on the
verbal phrase handout. (Not due; we will discuss in class.) Read the article by Fowles on advertising's fifteen appeals in Texts and Contexts. Paragraph two on "Black Hair" by Gary Soto in Reading Across American Cultures. Do the question one at the end of the article. (Summary of question: First define what he means by "grace" and then describe, using examples from the article, why he does not find it at his job.
